Your muscles don't care how long you train.
It's all or nothing.
More sets don't build more muscle. More fibres working builds more muscle. And there's a specific, biological reason why that distinction changes everything about how you should train.
It comes down to a principle in exercise physiology called "all or nothing" muscle fibre recruitment.
Here's what that means.
Individual muscle fibres don't do "a bit of work." They're either fully switched on, or they're not switched on at all. There's no dimmer switch but either on and off. When you pick up something light, your body doesn't lazily activate every fibre in the muscle at low effort. It activates just enough fibres to do the job and those fibres work flat out.
Everything else stays switched off. This is actually a brilliant design. It means your body is efficient. It doesn't waste energy switching on fibres it doesn't need but it also means something important for training: if the load is light, most of your muscle isn't doing anything at all. It's just along for the ride.
So how do you get all the fibres involved?
You need a load heavy enough (and a duration long enough) that your body has no choice but to keep recruiting more and more fibres to keep going. The easy ones (slow oxidative) get tired first. Then the next tier switches on (fast oxidative). Then the next (fast oxidative-glycolytic). By the time you reach genuine momentary failure — the point where another full rep simply isn't possible — you've worked through the whole recruitment pool, right down to the deepest, hardest-to-reach fibres in the middle of the muscle called fast glycolytic muscle fibres which have the most potential for growth.
That's the part most training misses. Not because people aren't working hard but because they stop before that full recruitment actually happens, or they spread a fixed amount of effort thinly across sets, rep ranges, and "feeling the burn," rather than driving one set all the way to genuine failure.
This is why we train the way we do.
One set, taken to true momentary muscular failure, with full focus and no held-back reserve, does something three half-hearted sets can't: it forces your body through the entire fibre recruitment ladder, every single session.
It's also why our sessions are short. You're not in here to accumulate volume. Twenty-five to thirty minutes, twice a week, is enough stimulus. More isn't better. More is often just more fatigue, with the same number of fibres actually doing the work.
What this means for you, practically:
The set that matters is the one where the last few reps genuinely don't feel easy. If you've finished a set and could clearly do more, that's not a failure on your part but it just means the stimulus didn't reach the fibres that drive growth and strength. That's exactly why we coach intensity the way we do, and why we'd rather you do one set brutally well than five sets adequately.
You don't need more time in the gym. You need the right dose, applied properly, and then the discipline to let your body do what it's built to do: adapt, repair, and come back stronger.
That's the whole job. We just make sure you actually get there.
