More Workouts Does Not Equal More Results.

A recent study just confirmed what many regular gym-goers suspected  the gap between working out a little and working out a lot may be far smaller than the fitness industry wants you to believe.

Picture two people at a gym. One performs a single focused set per exercise, twice a week and leaves the gym in under 45 minutes. The other person grinds through four times as many sets, three to four days a week, spending nearly two hours each session. After three months, who has bigger or stronger muscles? According to a major new multi-site randomised trial, the answer is: essentially neither.

Published in April 2026 by researchers across the US, UK, and Australia, this study conducted on resistance training volume and muscle growth. And its findings show: when it comes to training volume, more is not the same as more muscle.

What they did

The researchers recruited 120 experienced people who had already been training consistently for at least six months.

Participants were split into two groups:

  1. Low volume: 9 fractional sets per week for arms and thighs which was roughly equivalent to one set per exercise, three times a week.

  2. High volume: 36 fractional sets per week which is four times the workload, including multiple exercises per muscle group every session.

Both groups trained each set to momentary muscular failure. Both were monitored by qualified trainers. After 12 weeks, researchers measured changes in estimated muscle cross-sectional area at the arm and thigh using circumference and skinfold measurements. 

The Findings?

In plain language: doing four times more sets produced no meaningfulextra muscle in trained individuals. Both groups did gain some muscle but just very little.

What does this mean in everyday life?

Think of learning a language. When you first start, every lesson produces dramatic progress and six months in, you can hold conversations. But five years in? You might spend twice as many hours studying per week and barely notice improvement. Your brain has adapted to the skill and progress becomes a game of diminishing returns.

Your muscles work similarly. Researchers call this the "linear-log" theory of adaptation: early training produces rapid gains, but with each passing month of consistent exercise, your body becomes more efficient and the stimulus required to keep growing outpaces the returns. For truly new trainees, volume may indeed help but for someone already trained? The extra hours of work may be more about habit and psychology than physiology.

Modern culture is deeply invested in the idea that effort scales linearly with outcome meaning you work twice as hard, get twice as far. The gym is one of the last places where this myth still lingers. But what this study shows is that the signal matters far more than the volume of the signal.

Quality of effort, recovery, nutrition, stress management, sleep, and consistency across months and years are what contribute to your results the most long-term.

Two focused sessions a week, each set done with genuine effort and intentionality, appears to produce equivalent muscle development in trained people compared to marathon high-volume programs. The best workout program, after all, is one you actually do.
